Robert Kubica
Jan.4 (GMM) Robert Kubica will not leave Renault because the team was sold to the Genii group, his manager has confirmed.
Daniele Morelli said last month that it was “not automatic” that the 24-year-old Pole would honour his 2010 contract after the French carmaker sold a large stake.
But he told BBC Sport on Monday that Kubica only wanted “clarification of the new situation”.
“We are going in the right direction,” said Morelli. “There were no doubts, really, but it was very important we understood who were in the key roles in the team and of course also the budget — it is fundamental you have that for the updates to the car.”
He denied the initial reluctance, reportedly backed by a contractual clause, was simply a grab for more money.
“It is totally untrue that we were asking for more money,” said Morelli.
“It is not in our interests to take advantage. We want the money for the team.
“Robert wants a performing car. It’s useless if the driver gets more money if you have a weak car and lose (performance) bonuses. It’s better to score points and make podiums than to earn more money,” he added.
The report also said Morelli expects Eric Boullier to be confirmed as Renault’s new team boss, with Bob Bell returning to the technical director role, within the next two weeks.
