Sergio Perez fever struck Guadalajara on the weekend when the Sauber driver did a demo in the city streets
Feb.28 (PVM) Speaking to the media in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexican Formula 1 rookie Sergio Perez declared that he is ready and motivated to make his Formula 1 debut at the season opening Australian Grand Prix.
“We are ready to begin. We also have testing in Barcelona before going to Australia,” said Perez. “Every day I feel more suited, I have improved a lot and physically I’ve spent the last two months training to improve my strength, especially in the neck where F1 is very demanding.”
The Mexican is savouring his status as a Formula 1 driver, “I went through many [motorsport] categories but have never experienced anything like Formula 1. It is amazing in all areas: accelerating, braking, cornering. It is something beyond anything I imagined. Even out of the car, the work, is very intense with so much technical information to absorb.”
An estimated 200,000 people took to the streets of Guadalajara to see their hero drive his Sauber, a day that will be etched in the young driver’s memory forever,
“This was one of the best days of my life. It was a great, great experience. I have never experienced something like this before with so many people cheering me. I am proud to be Mexican, and to receive all this support. It is a big boost for me ahead of the new season,” he said.
Checo, as he is fondly known as by his fans, would have enjoyed Bahrain being the season opener. He explained, “I would’ve liked my debut race to be in Bahrain, because I won my first GP2 Asia race there and I know the track very well. Hopefully in Melbourne we can have a good result.”
Perez returns to Europe for the final test in Barcelona starting on 9 March, before travelling to Melbourne for his first Grand Prix weekend starting on 25 March.
