The genius of Newey gives Red Bull wings
22 July, 2011
Jul.22 (GMM) McLaren is the only outfit in Formula 1 with a “great” technical team, but it lacks brightest “star” Adrian Newey whose Red Bull RB7 creation is joining his legion of F1 world title winning masterpieces.
That is the view of pundit Marc Surer as well as Mario Theissen, who recently ended his long career as BMW’s motor sport director before the former Formula 1 squad enters DTM next season.
In a retirement interview with Switzerland’s Motorsport Aktuell, the German defended not trying to poach Newey whilst he was building up the now-defunct BMW-Sauber collaboration.
“I had the impression that Adrian very strongly based his technical team around himself, to his way of working. I was convinced that we needed our design and aerodynamic side to have a structure that was not about one person,” reaveled Theissen
“When I see today the way that Red Bull has gone, I must say: this person (Newey) is obviously so good that he beats the others no matter their methods. So hats off to him,” admitted Theisen
Former Grand Prix driver and pundit Surer agrees.
“For your car design you have two choices: either a great team of designers or a very strong individual. In my view the only great collaborative team is McLaren,” said Surer.
“All the others try to do it with individual stars, but none of them have a star like Adrian Newey,” he added.
Newey is the only designer to have won Constructors Championships with three different Formula One teams – he is also the brains behind the dominant 2011 Red Bull RB7. Newey designed cars have won the following Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championships:
• 1992 – Williams FW14B
• 1993 – Williams FW15C
• 1994 – Williams FW16
• 1996 – Williams FW18
• 1997 – Williams FW19
• 1998 – McLaren MP4/13
• 2010 – Red Bull RB6

To me, these geniuses are the ones who could have done a better job in 1994. Formula 1 lost the greatest racer… pretty much thanks to Newey and Head, and their weak steering column installed in Rothmans Williams. I know Ayrton ran out of his luck and there were problems with ’94 Williams’ steering and rear tyre pressures, but still… these guys earn big bucks and they did lousy job back then. Live and learn they say… but the price was wayyyy too big for learning this.
The genuis of Newey gives Red Bull wins more like.
