Newey puts family first over ‘great’ Ferrari
18 November, 2011
Nov.18 (GMM) Adrian Newey has admitted that one of the only things that has held him back from switching to Ferrari is his family.
The Briton, who has also won titles with UK based McLaren and Williams, is regarded as the best technical mind in formula one and instrumental to Red Bull’s current run of dominance.
So has he thought about moving to Ferrari, F1′s most evocative marque?
“There is no particular reason (why he has not), there has just never been the right time for it to occur,” Newey told Spain’s Canal 9.
“Also, my family and my children are in England and so it would be an upheaval for them to have to go to live in Italy.
“It is a shame,” he acknowledged, “because it is a great team and while many drivers covet driving for Ferrari one day, the same goes for engineers.”
Meanwhile, Newey denied recent reports that his next F1 car, the 2012 Red Bull RB8, will be completely different to the current single seater.
“People think I said that, but I did not,” he insisted.
“It will be an evolution of the (2009) RB5, the car that started this series,” Newey explained. “Last year’s car was based on it and so was this one (2011). RB5 is the father of them all.”

Adriano Neweyloni & Ferrari/Alonso combo would be politically detested by the anti Ferrari powers…and then the Bull will fall for a tasty BBQ.
I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to love in Italy.
Why not get some sun and experience life in a beautiful new setting?
Italy is close enough to England to make regular trips to visit family and friends.
Air travel in Europe is almost as easy, cheap and fast as catching a bus or a train.
It would be very interesting to see Newey at Ferrari and certainly a way for him to end his career in style but it may make for boring competition as Newey and Alonso would make a formidable pairing.
It would also offer Newey a new challenge as surely he has achieved all of his goals at Red Bull.
He could go down in history for winning the championship with four different constructors.
I would have thought that this would be a tempting prospect for him.
Come on Adrian! Stop playing it so safe!
That would have been great for Ferrari & Alonso…but also too easy to win championships and might get boring…its always more interesting to challenge and beat the best at your best…
Alonso doesn’t need the best car to win it for Ferrari…but for sure a much better car than the current…the current is a mess and Massa has proved it.
Even if the current technical team manages to create a dominant car all by themselves, Newey should still move to Ferrari and finish his brilliant career on a high note.
Red Bull is awesome, but at the end of the day I guess you’re feeling you’re just part of the marketing program for the Red Bull energy drink, and that can’t be a nice feeling for someone as passionate about F1 as this guy.
Hope Ferrari brings him to Maranello.
Ferrari should offer Newey his contract also allowing him and his family to live at Enzo Ferrari’s house. It would be perfect for him; he could eat, sleep, and work all day in Maranello!!!
Easy – Move the team to England!
Damn it, I forgot about all that lovely Italian Cuisine
That alone is a good enough reason to go to Ferrari…
Cmon Adrian, its a far cry from Slough to Florence. Ferrari would be willing to double Italy’s debt to get you over…and then pay that Euro figure in pounds if you push it a bit! All the fresh pasta…pizza…they’ll even throw in a Ferrari company car. Have the license to drink the finest red wine at lunch even on race weekends…make your own rules…La Dolce Vita
But I guess he wouldn’t be saying all that if he didn’t want to go there. Maybe this is a message to Ferrari along the lines “Look, I am willing to move to Italy and work for you but you’re going to have to make me an offer I can’t refuse”.
Fair enough, hope Ferrari do that.
That’s a damn shame because Italy is a beautiful country. Ross Brawn used to live in Florence while at Ferrari.
