Schumacher: Tyre war in F1 would be good, we would have decent tyres

19 July, 2012

Michael Schumacher (GER) Mercedes AMG F1 W03 leads Mark Webber (AUS) Red Bull Racing RB8. Formula One World Championship, Rd8, European Grand Prix, Race Day, Valencia, Spain, Sunday 24 June 2012.

Michael Schumacher not happy with current generation of F1 tyres

Jul.19 (GMM) With a single, neat soundbite, Michael Schumacher on Wednesday renewed his criticism of Pirelli and called for a new tyre war in FormulaOne. It is no secret that the seven time world champion is no fan of the rubber on offer this year.

Auto Bild this week reported that FIA president Frenchman Jean Todt would like to see Michelin return to the sport. But the French tyre marque has stated categorically that it would only come back if the rules are changed to allow tyre makers to compete against one another again.

During the FOTA fan’s forum in Stuttgart on Wednesday,  Schumacher admitted that he too would like to see a tyre war once again. Why?

“Because then we would have decent tyres,” the 43-year-old German is quoted.

Earlier this season, Schumacher likened Pirelli’s 2012 product to driving “on raw eggs”.

The Mercedes driver also admitted he would be open to contesting more than 20 grands prix per season.

“I think there are 34 match days that are watched on television in the (German football) Bundesliga,” said Schumacher, “so I think there is still room [in F1].”

what I agree on for sure is having better tyres. I am not interested in a tyre conservation competition against a racing one. However, I also do not want another variable as in two or three tyre wars. Simple, better tyres like in 2010.

Mattias I agree with you the tyres do suck, F1 needs better tyres
i want to see racing not tyre wars its sad to see the millions of dollars spent on these cars ,crews and drivers being wasted by substandard tyres we can all thank Bernie for that he’s the one that needs to retire.

@ The Real Philly J: quality and true “THIS IS NOT COMPETITIVE RACING”.
@ Speedo: indeed Michelin have the balls to challenge Pirelli and Bridgestone. But let’s also say that Pirelli have delivered what they were asked to produce not what they would have liked to produce which is a tyre that would show they can give the cars grip and speed which is what we would see in another tyre war.

    Smartest driver comment all season!

    THIS IS NOT COMPETITIVE RACING.

F1 was once all about the constructors, not the drivers. Tight rules structures to create a false parity using garbage tires, restricted engines, and limited aerodynamics is completely counter to a history of front engine heavyweights running against lightweight mid motors, 6 wheelers, all wheel drive, ground effects, active suspension, active handling, ABS, traction control, moving wings, fan cars, etc… all mixed up against one another in various combinations. That was real F1. This “modern” devolution into a spec racer series for the false illusion of fair driver competition is the real bore and turning F1 into GP2 or Indycar – which nobody cares about. IMHO F1 is destroying itself in the name of putting on a show for simpletons.

I agree with Michelin as this should be the case and also with Schumaker. If F1 stipulates all teams should use the same type of tyres then why not all the teams use the same type of engines either Ferrari, Mercedes or Renault. Then why not the same type or KERS, DRS, chassis an so on. Why not all the cars use Adrian.s design. The rule should be changed to let teams chose any type of tyre that suits the car as much as they choose the engine.

Kudos to Michelin because they are willing to COMPETE with Pirelli and Bridgestone without one tyre manufacturer having the monopoly. This is how it should be as much as the cars with different type of engines and drivers.

Schumacher wants it to go back to the way he had it at Ferrari where Bridgestone designed one tire for Schumacher and his Ferrari that no one else was even allowed to look at and another tire for everyone else.

Schumacher was not as great as he thinks he was and his Ferrari titles should all have an * by them due to the unfair tire advantage he had back then.

  12. Hawk 19 July, 2012 at 3:16 pm

    I agree.
old timers are stuck in the MSC time warp! let him go back to his driving days. F1 is moving on. saying that the tyres have a problem is liking saying no one will win this championship. why is it not MSC winning? why is he not ahead of Nico? come on…
I want the field to be as even as possible. I want the sport to come back to the driver.

  13. justme 19 July, 2012 at 2:35 pm

BS. Even now it is difficult to judge someone’s performance since you don’t really know how much of it was the car or the driver that made the difference. Even with equal tyres this year it is not always obvious if someone’s pace is related to having his tyres more optimal than his competitor. How unfair and uneven would the field be if we had 2 tyre suppliers where one tyre will always be better than the other. My advice for MS is retire or shut up and deal with equal material for once in your life!

  14. Matthias O'keeffe 19 July, 2012 at 2:20 pm

He’s right… The tyres do suck, and i hope michelin comes back… You know, you all should stop blaming Michael for not having a good comeback.. This year he’s improving but because of the tyres he can’t get a win yet..

  16. Waleran 19 July, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Michael Schumacher should realise that Formula 1 needs the spectacle, not a return to the boring races we had with previous tyre manufacturers.
