Jul.28 (GMM) When asked to compare Fernando Alonso with Michael Schumacher, Formula One veteran Hirohide Hamashima, who has worked closely with both drivers, insisted the great pair of drivers are “so very similar” but differ in temperament.

Fernando Alonso Michael SchumacherThe Japanese, previously Bridgestone’s technical chief and now working with Ferrari on “tyre issues”, is uniquely placed, having worked closely with both Schumacher and, now, Spaniard Alonso.

Having run away with the 2012 championship lead despite arguably not enjoying the best car this year, some commentators believe Alonso is among the best drivers of all time – and perhaps even better than seven time world champion Schumacher at his peak.

Hamashima, better known in the paddock as ‘Hammy’, was quoted at the Hungaroring by Spanish news agency EFE as saying Schumacher and Alonso are “so very similar”.

“They never give up in their efforts to achieve victories and titles,” he said.

“I think Fernando is calmer and Michael more aggressive,” added Hamashima.

“In meetings, Fernando says the right thing, and calmly. Schumacher also made good comments but his manner of expression was different,” he added.

Shumi has the most world driving titles to date period…
Alonso will be the 2nd best by the time he retires.
The conditions for driving F1 have changed drastically since the Shumi days at Ferrari.
Rejoice in the fact that we are blessed to witness two of the all time greats in the sport.
No one will aquire the amount of titles Shumi has most likely now.
Senna IMHO is a cut below both of these pilots.
He could not win in today’s rule restricted version of F1.

The article isn’t suggesting that Alonso is a better driver at Ferrari than Schumacher.

Alonso is producing some stunning drives but never had to handle the awful 1996 Ferrari, and win 3 times in it.
I think what Alonso is getting out of the 2012 Ferrari may be similar to what Michael extracted from the ’97 and ’98 cars.

Michaels wins in a bad car in terrible weather were astounding, as was his 4 stop strategy in France to leapfrog Alonso.

Alonso is without a doubt a very-very great driver, but Schumi is/was the greatest racer ever in the history of motorsport. The Schumi of 1994-2004 was the most complete driver of all-time. Now the age factor has obviously caught up with him and the car is bad also, but about 10 years ago he was the BEST of all-time. Well at least that’s my opinion.

perhaps even better than seven time world champion – this is your opinion! not the opinion of many. SCHUMI IS THE BEST EVER!
