Fernando Alonso tops the mid-season report card

Aug.20 (Apex) The authoritative German magazine Auto Motor und Sport has released a Formula One driver rating covering the first eleven races of the season, taking into account not only world championship points but also a myriad other factors including; comparisons to team mates, equipment at their disposal, accidents, and even luck.

Race winner Fernando Alonso (ESP) Ferrari F2012. Formula One World Championship, Rd10, German Grand Prix, Race, Hockenheim, Germany, Sunday 22 July 2012.It comes as no surprise that Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso dominated the scoring and sits at the top of the mid-season ‘report card’ with an almost perfect score of 9.09 out of a maximum ten points. The Spaniard has single handedly flown the Maranello flag in a car that is by no means the fastest on the grid. He has turned defeat into victory on a couple of occasions while totally dominating his team mate Felipe Massa – who ranked 17th.

Michael Schumacher who is down in 12th on the official 2012 world championship points table, was ranked sixth overall by AM&S. His season has been plagued by mechanical gremlins and bad luck that were not of his making. As a consequence his rating was even higher than that of team mate Nico Rosberg.

Money well spent there, P. Maldonado.

None has been more unlucy this season than Lewis Hamilton.. And I am NOT a McLaren fan.. I am a die hard Alonso fan!! :)

Alonso on top is no surprise. He has been the best driver on the grid this year with not such a good car. But then I would definately rank Lewis and Kimi above Vettel. Also Paul Di Resta should have been above Nico Hulkenberg. Cant understand the logic in rating Schumi above Rosberg. May be they took into account number of championships won previously. Otherwise there is no way Schumi can be above Rosberg if u consider the performances in this season alone!! I am very happy to see Pastor Maldonado at #23

Lewis and Kim should be ranked higher than Vettel if you are take equipment at their disposal, accidents, and even luck. The RB is a superior car and bad luck has plagued Lewis which include, pit stop, under fuelling penalty and Pastor, .even without a win Kimi ha performed and is way up there.

If Vettel had 12 and 25 in Malaysia and Valencia then he will leading the WDC by 2 points but what ever happened is Happened
Its time how Every one is approaching the 2nd Half as any slip up would let them out of contention.

    @hillside

I would have to disagree with you sir.

Vettel flashes his right hand index finger, his hand back sided as if he is substituting it for the middle finger towards you and is silently saying f*** you I’m number one bitches on top of that, his antics when things do not go his way hence car failure or penalty, or attitude towards other mid field teams…You can see it in his face and all his indirect comments in post race interviews. Might I also add his lengthy speeches after he is asked a post interview question hogs all the time from other drivers

  8. fools 21 August, 2012 at 6:01 am

Alonso i snot to be compared to Alonso @Hillside. Alonso raises his finger calmly. Not indirectly messaging to everyonehighhandedly saying… im number 1

If you remove all of McLaren’s blunders, Lewis’s score would be above Sebs for sure, but the Redbull was awfully (and surprisingly) off the pace at the start, but Vettel still brought the car home with decent points.
The same can be said about Lewis where he failed to convert 3 poles into one win, but the awful pitstops played their part, along with a baffling lack of heavy fuel pace from the car.

Nico and Pastor may have one win each this year but Pastor has a firmly established reputation as a race-ruiner, and Nico has been invisible pretty much since China.

Jensen should be lower down, given the car at his disposal and his very lacklustre performances. (and I don’t hate any driver – Jens is a lovely guy)

Only one I really disagree with is Kovy, whom I think should be higher.

Not at all surprised to see Maldonado near the bottom, but 23? For someone who has won a race this year, the rest of his season must have been trully shocking.

It’s not a bad list. MS gets ranked so high because of misfortunes that were not his fault. With the way this season has gone so far, you put Alonso 1st and whoever you put after him can’t be wrong. It’s all opinion for now.

  12. hillside 20 August, 2012 at 8:57 pm

lame Alosnso copying that finger pose from Seb!

  13. fools 20 August, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Of course Alonso is 1st…thats granted.

    Grosjean 13th? wow… definitely deserves 6th spot.

I knew Pastor would be 23th…lol. Although he has GP win.

These ratings will always reflect personal views & so is mine: 1) FA
    2) LH 3)SV 4)KR 5) MW 6) MS 7) RG 8)SP 9)NR 10) PdR

  15. Chris 20 August, 2012 at 7:35 pm

I think 3 and 4 must be swapped Kimi was with out a win and Lewis with 2 wins that was not right
    So Top 3 must be 1.Alonso , 2.Vettel , 3.Kimi

  16. Dream on 20 August, 2012 at 3:53 pm

This lost all credibility when it got to the driver ranked sixth.

Grosjean should be ranked way higher then Schumacher.

  17. andrewf1 20 August, 2012 at 3:20 pm

    @ Hawk, spot on!
Lol at Vettel in front of Hamilton and lol at all the german drivers sitting so well in that ranking. Biased much?

  18. Hawk 20 August, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Like you said “ignite debate amongst F1 fans”. very controversial list.
I personally would swap 2 and 3. well.. AM&S is German..
6 does not deserve to be where he is. well.. AM&S is German..
I agree with 7 vs 10. well.. AM&S is German..
12 & 13 should be at least equal, or 13 better.
    you hate 23.
However, I commend AM&S, these are the kind of articles we need, figures, however controversial (and biased?). let them stoke the fire. every one in F1 will definitely pick an interest in this.
