Button: I don’t enjoy standing on the Monza podium

6 September, 2012

The podium (L to R): Jenson Button (GBR) McLaren, second; Sebastian Vettel (GER) Red Bull Racing; race winner; Fernando Alonso (ESP) Ferrari, third. Formula One World Championship, Rd 13, Italian Grand Prix, Race, Monza, Italy, Sunday 11 September 2011.

Sep.6 (GMM) It is perhaps the most feted venue on the Formula One calendar, but McLaren driver Jenson Button admits that doesn’t enjoy standing on the Monza podium, despite what his team’s spin doctors have to say about the ‘Temple of Speed’.

Fans invade the track to watch the podium. Formula One World Championship, Rd 14, Italian Grand Prix, Race Day, Monza, Italy, Sunday 12 September 2010.In McLaren’s official pre-race preview of the Italian grand prix, the British team said Monza’s famous “Tifosi” are “sure to give every team a lot of support” this weekend.

Button, however, apparently didn’t read that script.

The Telegraph quotes him as saying that Monza is “not one that I enjoy standing on the podium at”.

“The Tifosi are there to support Ferrari. They’re not there to support us,” he added.

Button finished second at Monza in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Told that the red sea of Tifosi screaming support for Ferrari from beneath the podium must be a sight to behold, Button answered: “Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t like people booing. I’m not used to football crowds.”

“Winning in Spa was definitely amazing. I’ve won in Monaco, I’ve won in Suzuka, and now I’ve won in Spa.

“Those three stand out for me as being very special circuits. The only one missing is Silverstone, my home grand prix.”

I write this comment just after seeing this year podium ceremony (and with a memory of previous years). As a spectator i did not enjoyed booing, and FA didn’t as well. I’d love Alosno to win WDC and Perez to win this race (he deserves to get a win this year) but there’s no reason really to boo Hamilton (and McLaren) – there’s much more negative emotions from the fans then between any drivers. If you have respect for what your beloved team/competitor does (in any sport) than you should take example from them and show some respect to their opponents. Because of this brief moment the word ‘tifosi’ have some distaste to it. /not a Brit btw

Button answered: “Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t like people booing. I’m not used to football crowds.”

I understand his comment at the same time I dont because winning anywhere or on someone home race or your home race or any race should be a joy regardless being booed….

However don’t expect the Tifosi to turn down there “booing” now towards you Jenson after that comment.

“Some things are better left un-said”

@Brian awwww what’s the matter you Mclaren fanboy? Are you jelly that Ferrari makes such great road cars? Come on, we both know that you didn’t mean it when you said “crap road cars”. Everyone in the world would love to drive a Ferrari, whether they admit it or not. And you are no different Brian. You may say all kinds of stuff here but you know very well that Ferrari is an absolute dream car and you would definitely go crazy from happiness if you could just sit in a Ferrari, let alone drive one. Deny all you want, but no one won’t believe you anyway. And every F1 driver’s dream is to one day drive for Ferrari and Jenson is no different. He has even said it many times.
So shushhh Brian, you don’t know what you’re talking about!

Its obvious the home crowd would support their home team, and button is not alone he has 21 fellow mates not part of ferrari, but they never said anything!! i just cant think of a driver not wanting a podium just because of the crowd!!

I wonder what the McLaren brass are beginning to think of the two wankers they employ as drivers. M. Whitmarsh’s butt**le must pucker-up every time these two merely open their mouths.

Forza Ferrari, the thing about joining Ferrari in this image managed era is that you would have to drive a cr@p road car as a company car. JB seems actually to be objecting to the boo’s more than anything. One thing you can say about him is that he is a gentleman, that Ecclestone tartlet’s remarks to the contrary notwithstanding…

  11. Forza Ferrari 6 September, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Well of course the Tifosi don’t support Mclaren! Why the f**k should they?! Tifosis are passionate Ferrari fans and we support only and ONLY Ferrari! Button should try to become a Ferrari driver if he wants to feel that kind of fantastic support.

@ Butterfly you can say that again. What is it with both McLaren drivers. Are they both immature or what. Lewis tweets and now Button shoots (his mouth). Button had no right to comment on his team mates tweets. Not done.

Here he is being negative. May be because Lewis will come back stronger and determined than ever. Button as always wants to be heard and some of the articles are a bore.

  13. Butterfly 6 September, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Jenson fits well with the whole McLaren philosophy of talking too much and not delivering enough.

  14. Butterfly 6 September, 2012 at 1:39 pm

That has got to be the dumbest thing Jenson has ever said.
