Alonso: 37 points is nothing, we have to win more races
14 September, 2012
Sep.14 (GMM) Fernando Alonso insists that Ferrari must target winning more grands prix in 2012 if it wants to win this edition of the Formula One World Championship title.
The Spaniard said recently that it might be possible for him to defend his 37 point lead in the drivers’ chase simply by remaining on the podium at the remaining races of the season.
But he said during a media event in Spain this week: “Managing this points gap is going to be hard, because I think everyone is going to be on the attack.
“The whole situation can change in one race that goes wrong. So we have to keep developing, working hard, trying to win races.
“We can’t be thinking about being fourth or fifth, or doing podiums, or how to manage [the points gap], we have to be thinking of winning races. 37 points is nothing,” he insisted.
Alonso said Ferrari is bringing developments to the F2012 package not only next weekend in Singapore, but also the subsequent races in Japan and Korea.
The 31-year-old was, however, reluctant to talk about the future, even when asked what his relationship is like with Sergio Perez.
Reports have linked the young Mexican with a move to Ferrari next year.
“I have nothing to say, especially in response to a report or a newspaper. The relationship [with Perez] is great, as it is with everyone else,” said Alonso.
The Spaniard and his team have so far this season scored three victories, seven podiums and been in the points 12 times out of the 13 races, but they will be mindful that in 2010 with the title apparently sewn up they lost it all due to a bad strategy call in the season’s final race in Abu dhabi.

@Hawk
I guess Vettel can Dominate from here don’t think i’m biased
but the reasons for that are they clearly didn’t have the pace and a Top Team don’t want to be like that they will surely have some thing stored for future
Almost next tracks are RBR tracks except India and Abudhabhi.
Even though it was Alonso V Vettel V Hamilton V Raikkonen V Webber we can clearly see who can be in the Hunt with alonso at the beginning of Next month
Exactly.
when I say Lewis, I mean Kimi and Vettel too. they are in exactly the same position which makes it very difficult for them, in that none of them will dominate. they will only have a chance against Alonso if they dominate.
@Hawk
i completely agree with you on getting points but i don’t think redbull and vettel will be counted out so easily they bounced back all long and i believe they will start winning again as most of the tracks suited to red bull so i think they will make their car to be the class of field to hold their titles
going by 2010 which was the last “proper” F1 season, Alonso will need 80 points in the next 7 races to land him the title; an average of 4th place. that means Lewis needs at least 120 to beat that; an average of 2nd. With the current WDC that is a very tall order (2nd & 4th separated by 2 pts). therefore without a DNF, Alonso has almost sealed the WDC. this is notwithstanding that in 2010 Alonso was 25 pts ahead of Vettel with Interlagos and Abu Dhabi to go, and 15 with only Abu Dhabi to go. But that was the time when Red Bull started dominating which is not yet the case today. Ferrari will be more prepared now. Like in 2009, can the WDC be sealed in the first half of the season and cruise in the second?
No more lucky wins for Alonso this year, unless he asks Piquet to come back.
Alonso has to win or be on the podium to consolidate his lead and so does Lewis in the next race, and the races to come. This season looks like it is going down to the wire – championship could be won or lost by a single point the same as in 2007 and 2008. Kimi and Vettel are also knocking on the door and these two will have to manage to keep the door firmly shut. McLaren would be ruing the bungled pit stops and under fuelling which has cost Lewis valuable championship points. Alonso and Lewis are the best two drivers on the grid and there is no doubt about it. Vetel seems to be getting desperate as it has not gone his way unlike 2010 and 2011. I hope the stewards will play it fair by all the drivers. It is going to be one topsy-turvy season to the end.
Savvy Alonso realizes he has to win more races this season to secure the title. This kind of thinking is the reason why he’s the current points leader. Alonso keeps the others awake at night whether he’s leading the championship or not…
Because of FIA in Monza has Mr. Alonso more poits as he should have.
Thats F1 world in Italy.
Bravo Vettel, Your time is comming sooner that soon.
@fake f1 fan :
have you run out of names that you had to take my login name, you freak !
I completely disagree with that guy, beacause i think that Alonso and Hamilton are todays best drivers the grid, infact the best driver of their generation !!
@hawk. You seem to be missing the point. Alonso is not a miracle worker because he has Massa as a teammate. He is a great driver because he is leading the championship standings even though he started the season with an inferior car. No other driver from the top 4 teams can say the same thing.
@ andy. Well said.
I do not thq a rookie can have a HUGE advantage over a defending double WDC; however much you favour them. It’s just that Alonso as no. 1 driver at the time wanted Lewis on a leash wc Ron refused to do but the ground was even. If Alonso currently had a teammate like Lewis he would not be 37 clear wc wld cost him the WDC today. To win the WDC with 2 contenders in the team you must have a clearly superior car like the Red Bull of yesterday. It’s why Alonso wants an average teammate so that he wins the WDC with a huge salary to boot. It’s bse of Massa that he is being hailed today as the best driver on the grid. He makes him look like a miracle worker. Therefore when he says one other driver can drive a bad car, take him very seriously; been there done that.
@f1 fan i am a fan of lewis and alonso but i really think lewis had a huge advantage on alonso during his stay at mclaren. remember that lewis was groomed by mclaren ever since his karting days
Alonso doesn’t just drive to secure points. He is a winner. Had great chance of wining Spa or Podium but got a DNF. Also could of won 2 other races…Canada and British GP.
I have to disagree @f1 fan…Alonso didnt reveal anything. It was Hamilton’s team. He was groomed there and the British hate Spaniards and he Alonso was getting alot of dramatic press between his rival Hamilton who even both admit are good friends off the track. They both tied in points…you cant really say Alonso was exposed or he was revealed? What was revealed that he tied with Hamilton he definitely didnt get handled by him.
Who is better then Alonso right now? Please tell me…
I completely agree with Andy’s comment, well said.
The best – no. One of the best – most definitely.
Not sure how Alonso fans got decency make excuses for 2007, after the way he won 2005.
You win some you loose some. But Ferrari’s karma is very heavy to carry, lets see if Alonso get what he came to Ferrari for!
Besides, much of what happened in 2007 was Uncle Ron’s work behind the scenes.
@ f1 fan:
I think you will be out there on your own if you don’t think that Alonso is the current best driver on the grid, but of course this matter will alway be subject to bias and personal favourites.
I had Alonso and Vettel just edging away from Lewis until Hungary. Lewsi seems to be back on form and I hope we can just see his brilliant raw pace for the rest of the season.
What Alonso has done with the Ferrari consdering how poor it was at the start of the season is the mark of an all time great.
It’s very easy to see that both Hamilton and Alonso have matured tremendously since the famous 2007 season and now have genuine respect for each other. yes, Alonso was petulant, and sometimes Hamilton still appears to have a bit of that in him, but he’s younger. 2007 is very much in the past. Alonso is relaxed, media-friendly, and at the top of his game. He’s enjoying it and it shows.
I hope Lewis can do the same because I’m a fan of both, but do believe that Alonso deserves this year because of the car that he started with.
I’m watching f1 for at least 10 years and i’ve seen what Alonso is capable of. From my point of view he is a great driver but not the best on the grid. Whiteout the whole team behind him and politics involved he would struggle a lot. He “revealed” his character when he was hamilton team mate and…loosing.
Alonso will just drive for points to preserve his lead
