Lotus: Delighted that Kimi Raikkonen is staying with us for 2013

Oct.29 (Reuters) Kimi Raikkonen will stay at Lotus next year, the Formula One team said on Monday after making the announcement in a video posted on YouTube.

Kimi Raikkonen Lotus 2012 Indian Grand Prix - Friday“We’re delighted Kimi is staying with us for 2013,” the British-based team said on their official Twitter feed (@Lotus_F1Team) after posting a link to the film clip.

Raikkonen, who won the 2007 title with Ferrari, made his F1 comeback this season after ending a switch to the FIA World Rally Championship.

The Finn has been the most consistent driver on the grid, with 14 successive scoring finishes and every racing lap completed. He has been on the podium six times in 2012.

The 33-year-old is third in the championship, 67 points off the lead, with three races to go despite not having won yet this season.

Raikkonen said, “I think my return to Formula 1 has gone pretty well and the team has done a very good job all year so far. To be honest, I didn’t expect to be fighting for the Drivers’ Championship this season when you look at where the team was in 2011, so it has been great to be on the podium so many times and to score points on a regular basis. I feel very comfortable with Lotus F1 Team and we share the same philosophy of racing. Continuing with the team was an obvious choice for me and I’m looking forward to making another step forward together next year.”

Team principal Eric Boullier told reporters after Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix that neither Raikkonen nor French team mate Romain Grosjean were likely to win any of the season’s final three races.

“Realistically I would be kidding people if I said [that] we would win a race this year,” he said.

“Yes I can be frustrated at not getting this missing, or elusive, win but we had a good start to the season with a new package and two new drivers. If you put us in the same position next year then it will be a different story.”

Raikkonen was seventh in India, Grosjean ninth.

Grosjean, despite several first corner crashes of the kind that got him suspended for the Italian Grand Prix in September, is almost certain to be kept on as well.

Boullier added, “Kimi has made an exceptional comeback to Formula 1. From the first time he sat in the car this year it was clear he had lost none of his pace or technical feedback and we have been rewarded by a focused and motivated driver all season. For Lotus F1 Team to be fighting for such strong championship positions this year is in no small part attributed to Kimi’s talent and experience of racing. It was a natural conclusion for us to confirm that we will be harnessing his abilities for next season.”

I hope they fix the car for qualifying and first few laps. Kimi was very consistent this season very clinical in his wheel to wheel drives, but he did do an enormous amount of small mistakes during qualifying. It is as if it’s due to car not performing as it usually does during those first couple laps.

And that 7th gear issue is just ridiculous, they have been slapped with same thing since Spa, and they still failed to address the issue. I guess following a slower car all race is more fun!

I’m sure kimi will call it quits if he doesn’t get a better car next year.

Lotus seems to be in the same boat as Sauber…they lack in developement as the season goes on.They have a good basic design but do not develope.
If Kimi does not win races he will look for another team!

after Spa, Lotus has been a doggy car! the best they could qualify is 5th then on sundays, its also 5th and its stupidly slow on the straights. I’m amaze how Kimi is being patient about his team.
