Nov.30 (GMM) Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has slammed as a complete joke Ferrari’s efforts to question the outcome of the 2012 Formula world championship in the aftermath of an epic season finale in Brazil.
The controversy erupted when video footage emerged – and was circulated widely by “Fernando Alonso’s management” according to Sport Bild – of Sebastian Vettel purportedly overtaking illegally under yellow flag conditions at Interlagos.
Ferrari confirmed that it asked the governing body for “clarification”, and spokesman Luca Colajanni insists the Maranello team has “until [Friday 30th November] to file an appeal”.
British newspapers quote Vettel’s good friend Ecclestone as blasting the affair “a complete joke”.
“It was a super race, a super championship. Now everyone is talking about this,” he said.
Ecclestone said that the subsequent furore is a “joke” because of the “fact” that Vettel overtook only once he had passed a waving green flag.
“I don’t think there needs to be any action taken. It’s completely and utterly wrong,” he added.
“It’s a very silly, bad thing for anyone to do to push this because there is nothing in it. Ferrari had a great season but this was a mistake.”
Indeed, FIA spokesman Norman Howell indicated that the Paris federation will now spell out the news to Ferrari in a formal letter of response.He told Germany’s Der Spiegel: “Vettel will suffer no consequence and will remain the 2012 world champion.”
“Now that Ferrari has sent us a letter asking for an explanation we will give it to them,” he said.
F1 race director Charlie Whiting added: “We never had any doubt that Vettel’s overtaking was compliant.
“There were conflicting flags and lights,” he acknowledged to Germany’s Sport Bild. “It was investigated during the race, with the result that there should be no punishment.”
An FIA spokesman added: “Vettel’s title is not in danger. A further investigation will not happen.”
However, Ecclestone acknowledged that another route open to Ferrari is civil action.
“But the case is flawed before it starts,” he told the Telegraph. “Nothing is going to happen.”
But what has happened already is the criticism of Ferrari and Spaniard Alonso. Germany’s Berliner Kurier accused them of being “sore losers”.
And the Bild-Zeitung daily said that the efforts to have Vettel’s championship overturned are “Unfair. Un-ferrari”.

Haha now the sore losers in the name of Alonso fanboys are saying it’s OK for them to question the incident because they have all the right.
I think if it was the other way around (Fernando was champ and RBR was questioning the pass) they’d say the same – RBR are sore losers etc etc.
STFU you dumb Alonso fanboys. Just admit that Sebs and RBR were better. I’m not saying this coz I’m an RBR fan (I’m a Kimi fan) but just watch and enjoy the sport. We TV viewers gain nothing but just stupid bragging rights when our favorite drivers win. So there’s no point in feeling sore or overexcited.
So let’s just wait for the 2013 season to start and enjoy for the sake of sportsmanship.
The thing that I can’t get my head around is that Ferrari are capable of analysing the data and coming to the conclusion that Vettel was not doing anything at all illegal by themselves. Hence, they must have thought ‘well lets just give it a punt’ try to discredit Red Bull. That’s why most people will find Ferrari’s action distasteful Bassie.
Sky must be very embarrassed, they’ve been shouting for a penalty for 5 days … Their myopic commentators couldn’t seen the green flags everyone else could see.
Ok, It is ridiculous to classify Ferrari as sore losers because of this incident.
I think -and genuinely hope- that any other team would have done the same!
What a BS to say that it is unsportsmanlike to challange a curious overtaking, wich as Whiting admitted had contradicting lights and flags on that part of the track.
I think it is only right to question an overtake like the 2 overtakes that Vetel did. After a close study now it seems that Vettel did nothing wrong and that he is indeed the WC.
But people saying what Ferrari did is not right are just shortsighted morons. They probably don’t realize how much is at stake for those teams.
For an addional 20million dollar i think it is only sane to question and study any doubtfull event.
Asit turn out Vettel did nothing wrong andhe can enjoy his extra 3million euro’s on his account.
Of course he is! Look how close they are… father and son look alike. You cannot break the ecclestone decision! His adopted son, vettel will have his heart broken and will cry like a girl. Doesn’t matter, everyone knows that the 2012 champion is a joke. Not even man enough to admit he made that illegal pass. The deserving champion is Fernando Alonso.
Bernie has spoke. That will be the end of it!
Ferrari now look rather stupid. All because of their Prima Donna driver. Having a spoilt brad representing Ferrari isn’t working; it’s ruining their reputation as a leading figure in sport.
