Lauda already flexing muscles on the job at Mercedes

18 December, 2012

Niki Lauda (AUT). Formula One World Championship, Rd 15, Japanese Grand Prix, Qualifying Day, Suzuka, Japan, Saturday 8 October 2011.Dec.18 (GMM) Niki Lauda, already flexing his muscles in his new position, is looking to tweak the Christmas holiday plans of Mercedes F1 team staff, as he bids to get the German squad up to speed for 2013.

Germany’s Bild newspaper said that, since the triple world champion started his new job as Mercedes’ non-executive chairman, he often “arrives unannounced” at the team’s Brackley headquarters.

The report said that Lauda, 63, has concluded that “the communication between the departments of the factory is in great need of improvement”.

Bild claimed that the Austrian great has also been studying the vacation plans of Brackley’s 450 staff, with many to be completely absent in December and January.

“Understandable after a long season,” said Bild. “But that is when ideas for the new car are needed.”

Lauda told Welt am Sonntag newspaper: “I am in England very often; right now, just to analyse things.

“It is interesting that Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were always in the top five at the beginning of the year, and we won in Shanghai.

“Everything was on track until suddenly it was completely backwards. Together with Ross Brawn we have to ensure that never happens again.”

He also confirmed that Christmas will not be a period for quiet reflection.

“When everyone else is on vacation, I will use the time to do everything to bring Mercedes to the front again – because that’s where we belong,” said Lauda.

  2. Ferrari/Todt era was a farce 24 December, 2012 at 9:34 pm

The only reason Ferrari was so dominant back then was because they had Bridgestone tires that no other team was allowed to have and those tires were a full TWO SECONDS A LAP FASTER than tires supplied to the other teams.

    That is a verified fact!

Given Mercedes’ dismal performance in the second half of 2012, Lauda’s right to start cracking the whip, if only to wake a few people up. Jean Todt did the same thing at Ferrari and he eventually turned that team into a dominant force during the Schumacher era. If Mercedes truly intends to excel in F1, then extraordinary effort will be required, from all staff, starting right now.
