Wolff: The only thing that counts in Formula 1 is lap time
4 February, 2013
Newly appointed Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff is part of the ‘new wave’ that has taken over at the helm of the Silver Arrows team and he is under no illusions about the task ahead for the team to claim a berth among the elite Formula 1 outfits.
The launch of the Mercedes W04 at Jerez today was a special occasion for Wolff as it the first F1 car to break cover under his tenure and he admitted as much, “The first laps for a new car are always filled with emotion and today was no exception.”
“It is even more meaningful when the car is a Silver Arrow: Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition of racing success and this is something we are proud to represent and determined to live up to,” added the Austrian who along with triple world champion Niki Lauda are newcomers to the team at senior management level.
“In the fortnight since I joined the team, I have been impressed by what I have found. The people are highly motivated, open-minded and determined to succeed. Our drivers are hungry for success, too, and it will certainly be fascinating this season to see how Nico and Lewis perform together,” mused Wolff.
But concluded, “Ultimately, though, Formula One is very straightforward and the only thing that counts is lap time.”
