Horner slams McLaren for ECU troubles
18 March, 2013
At the end of a nightmare weekend for McLaren, Red Bull’s Christian Horner added the final insult by blaming the Woking based team for Mark Webber’s Melbourne woes.
Australian Webber had a terrible start and then a KERS issue in his home race, and Horner said afterwards: “You need to ask McLaren why the ECU didn’t work because he was blind and had no telemetry.
“It is something they need to get on top of because it caused a lot of issues during testing,” he added.
Horner is referring to the standard electronic control unit mandatorily supplied by McLaren subsidiary MES to every team in Formula 1.
As for McLaren’s disastrous new 2013 car, there is talk of reverting to last year’s winning machine, but it is believed that the British team is more likely to try to improve the MP4-28.
Triple world champion and Mercedes team figure Niki Lauda tipped McLaren to bounce back.
“McLaren is famous for responding quickly to problems. It is impossible to write them off,” he said on German television RTL.

that same ECU was in all the cars on the grid including Kimi’s and Vettel’s. Horner just finding an excuse of continually sabotaging that second RB9
It’s simply unethical to have a competitor produce any standardized component for the series.
I still can’t believe they have the contract.
I really hate how Bernie and the FIA are soooo influenced by the top teams. Like Bridgestones and Ferrari, this just smacks of shadiness which is terrible for the sport.
I would never be confortable having electronics I do not fully understand in my car made by a competitor. Wonder if McClaren pushed a button and turned off Rosberg’s car so that they wouldn’t be so many points behind in the constructors champ….I know it’s a reach!
